Why Use Vac-Rocks?

Say you’ve got a really nice model and you are planning in advance… it’s wise to plan ahead.

A nice simple base can set off your model. But what if it’s a really, really nice model—you’re going to work hard on it, scratch build stuff, light it up!

Okay, you’ve got this hunk of wood or a plastic frame box… well… nuts! It looks like a store window display for soap.

Take heart! Vac-Rocks is the answer to a modelers’ prayer!

Some Choice!

The difference is astonishing!

Vac-Rocks are vacuum-formed rocks, artfully chosen for their character.

Because of the fractal nature of rocks—you can’t tell how large they are without a frame of reference, which your model will provide—these shapes will satisfy a huge range of model scales.

The natural beauty of each rock adds immensely to the look and feel of your model!

Vac-Rocks will add to figure subjects, a spaceship planetfall or tanks in the desert.

Vac-Rocks! Stand By For Action!

Wooden base and model not included

Since Vac-Rocks are heavy-duty sheet styrene, they are models too.

They can be:

  • trimmed
  • shaped
  • painted
  • cut

You can:

  • drill holes
  • fill holes
  • tilt them
  • cut and butt up one or more against a flat background
  • blend one to the other with glues, putty and paint
  • blend them to the base
  • pile them up
  • re-position a model support by applying spot putty, prime and paint

Vac-Rocks are also semi-transparent, so you could make them glow for that really scary alien thing!

Foam Base with Vac-Rocks and Spackle

If you want to make your Vac-Rocks blend into a sculpted base use the readily available “pink” foam insulation from the “Big Box” home improvement centers.

Use “All Purpose Spackling Paste” and follow the directions—especially the safety ones! It’s easy and pretty inexpensive. It is possible to sculpt with this this spackle, but it’s a better surfacer. It sands, drills, putties, primes and paints very well.

Rips in Vac-Rocks can be fixed

What You Should Know

Vac-Rocks are vacuum formed from real rocks—crags, lumps and bumps and all! The more “character” the harder it is to remove the Vac-Rock from its model. This means you will get one or more Vac-Rock with tears or rips in the material. So just know that there may well be some pretty big tears to repair.

As mentioned above, these are models too! Made out of familiar styrene, you can solvent-weld them, putty, prime and paint them back to rocky perfection in no time!

Tip: to strengthen rips, add a narrow strap to the inside—this increases the surface area for the glue. Use either a solvent glue or a thick modeling glue, like ModelMaster Liquid Cement For Plastic.
